Manchester's Black Queer Community on the map. WHERE WE LIVE : CONVERSATIONS WITH BLACK LESBIANS & GAYS IN THE NORTH WEST.
The North West’s black LGB community is finally being put on the map after recently winning several awards in the Pink Paper Readers Awards 2009, the country’s biggest lesbian, gay and bisexual awards. The award for best black/minority ethnic group or organisation in Britain went to Black North West which meets at the Lesbian and Gay Foundation. Derek Urgohide is one of the three volunteers who co-ordinate the group. “It came as a surprise to me as I did not even know we were nominated!” he says. To celebrate this achievement, the Lesbian & Gay Foundation in collaboration with Ajamu X of rukus! Federation are proud to present a special all day event on Saturday 28th March to help develop local projects for and by black lesbian, gay and bisexual people living and working in the North West. “The day event is an ideal way to share, talk and bring different black LGBT voices from across the UK to Manchester” says Ajamu, who will be sharing his own experiences of growing up in Huddersfield. Also speaking at this unique event will be:
Also scheduled to appear are award-winning writer and performer Dean Atta, songwriter and performer Michelle Sakim, and Claud Cunningham of queer diva club experience, Black Angel. “This event is the first of its kind in this area. It will appeal to all those who are part of the community, and those within the North West and beyond who want to work with this small yet vibrant community,” says Ajamu. “Where We Live is a perfect opportunity for us to highlight our black LGB group and profile people who are involved with projects in this arena” adds LGF’s Communications Manager, Andrew Gilliver. “The general aim of the day is to share experiences and take ideas forward to improve service provision and inclusion across the region. This is a first for us but I really hope it will be something we can do annually. Everyone who wants to attend is welcome.” This is a free event, with speakers, discussion groups, films and lots of information. 12.30pm - 6.30pm, Saturday 28th March. The Lesbian and Gay Foundation, 3rd floor, Princess House, 105 – 107 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6DD.
