Historical Blackout? | Print |  E-mail
ImageWe recently visited the website of "The Official Black History Month" guide and was really surprised (not) that there was no mention of any events that was happening up and down the country in the Black LGBT community, so we sent them a letter, the details of which are below.

Dear BHM,

I just visited your website for information regarding events during Black History Month, and though I am happy to see that you have a host of information, I am sorely disappointed that from a search on your website there was not a single mention about events happening or being organised by organisations in the Black LGBT community,  Yet you self-title yourself as "The Official Guide To Black History Month".  How can you be the 'official guide' when you have left out a part of the community?

Denying the fact that there are black gay and lesbian people within our communities will not make us go away, it will only show you up to be not with the times, bigots, or both.  We contribute to black history just as much as anyone else, and some of the privileges we enjoy today are because of these same people you are trying to rub out of the history books.

Any part of our history that is left out makes it incomplete and our history an incomplete one.

How about running a piece on Claude McKay, Rotimi Fani Kayode, Gladys Bently, Nella Larsen, or even Paul Whitfield?  This would be so refreshing and inclusive.  Maybe you could visit, rukus.co.uk, ukblackout.com, outburstuk.org and bgmag.org.uk to get some ideas?

Let's celebrate all of our history, not just the parts that makes you feel comfortable.
